While it wasn't quite the way he wanted it, Vernon, B.C.'s Vasek Pospisil has to be happy with how his Davis Cup career ended.
His Canadian team fell 3-2 to Hungary in the first round of Davis Cup Qualifiers, after Marton Fuscovocis defeated Alexis Galarenau in the final rubber. The five-match event was held in Montreal's IGA Stadium from Feb. 1-2.
The 34-year-old Pospisil made his retirement announcement from the international competition after the final match. He did end his career on a high note, as he teamed up with Liam Draxl to win the doubles match in the tie, 7-6(2), 6-4, over Hungarians Peter Fajta and Mate Valkusz.
The doubles win started a mini-comeback for the Canadians after losing the opening two singles matchups. Gabriel Diallo then drew Canada even with the European nation, defeating top 60 player Fabian Marozsan, 6-1, 6-3 in the fourth match. However, Galaraneau could not seal the comeback in the winner-take-all fifth rubber, leaving Canada out early in the annual competition.
Pospisil started his Davis Cup career in 2008, and has since played in 35 ties.
Among his many accolades include two Davis Cup championship appearances (2019, 2022) and one victory (2022), with a total of 32 wins and 27 match losses. His singles record was 15 wins and 14 losses, with his doubles mark at 17 wins and 13 losses.
At the post-event press conference, Pospisil said the 2022 win meant the most to him in his career.
"I never wanted to win anything more," he said.
