VictoriaBԪַs Ukrainian community will gather to honour the legacy of Taras Shevchenko, a 19th-century poet whose work remains central to Ukrainian identity.
The annual concert on Sunday, March 9 at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre will feature performances of ShevchenkoBԪַs poetry and songs, highlighting his influence on Ukrainian literature and culture.
BԪַShevchenkoBԪַs work is increasingly important as we face contemporary challenges to Ukrainian identity,BԪַ said Pati-Ann Lawe, event coordinator with the Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Society of Vancouver Island. "This commemoration helps us preserve our cultural foundations in uncertain times."
Born into serfdom in 1814, Shevchenko wrote about UkraineBԪַs struggle under imperial rule. His work continues to resonate within Ukrainian communities and beyond.
The concert will include performances from LUNA Ensemble, Kalyna Ukrainian Choir and Vinok ChildrenBԪַs Choir, as well as a bilingual presentation by UVic Slavic studies professor Serhiy Yekelchyk.
The event will take place at 2 p.m. at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre (3277 Douglas St.). Admission is $10, with free entry for children and students.
