At the beginning of every season, a helpful way to orientate and shift into a new groove is to mark the occasion intentionally; one way to do this is through events and celebrations.

Where summer was a time for beaches, outdoor festivals, sunshine and park events, Fall offers a moment for more introspective and cozy activities. To make your fall bright, colourful, and warm, below are four events to discover; a hauntingly beautiful choir concert, a poetry reading, a sunflower festival, and an indulging feast.

Siglo de Oro: Renaissance Reflections

At Christ Church Cathedral on Sept. 14, the church will be filled with the sounds of a world-renowned choir making their Canadian debut. UK Choir Siglo de Oro will bring its innovative programming, which includes the beautiful music of the Renaissance up to sounds from the present day.

Since the group debuted in 2014, it has become well known for its work in early music, bringing to life repertoire that has been neglected for centuries. Part of this mission has involved collaborating with the charity Multitude of Voyces to promote the work of underrepresented composers, including recording volumes of sacred music by women.

The choir has also made four critically acclaimed recordings with Delphian Records, touching up music written for Milan Cathedral around 1500 to new commissions written for the group.

Verses in the Shadows: Death of Persephone Book Launch Walk

Yvonne Blomer is a local award-winning author who served as the city of Victoria poet laureate from 2015-2018. To mark the release of her new poetry book Death of Persephone, Blomer will lead a poetry walk starting at Munro's Books through Victoria's historic alleyways and end at Fortune Gallery for a celebration and book signing. Along the way, there will be poetry readings, surprise guests and a chance to see parts of Victoria you may not have seen before.

Brewery and the Beast

Fall is the perfect season for feasting and nourishment. For $149.95 + taxes, Brewery and the Beast offers visitors the chance to taste as many culinary creations as they can from 50+ of Vancouver Island's best chefs, who will cook over live fire. Beverages are also included in the ticket price and include craft beer, cocktails, cider, seltzers, hard teas, wine and non-alcoholic options. This is a unique chance to try local cuisine and locally-sourced ingredients.

Saanichton Sunflower Festival

Til Sept. 15, the acres of fields at Ocean View Estates in Saanichton will be full of colourful sunflowers. It's a once-in-a-year chance to see this beautiful sight and take advantage of the photo-ops, either with your camera or via the professional photographer onsite (for a fee that includes admission). Visitors can also pick their own sunflowers, ranging from $1-4 a stem. On weekends, Indian street food and a beverage garden will be onsite.
