JOCK TALK: Shamrocks opener kicks off an action-packed sports week

The day local lacrosse fans have been waiting for finally arrives this week: the Victoria Shamrocks open their Western Lacrosse Association season Friday (May 19) when they welcome the Langley Thunder to The Q Centre for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Still with lacrosse, the junior Shamrocks start their week on the road on Saturday when they take on Langley before returning to The Q Centre this Sunday to host the Coquitlam Adanacs. Game time starts at 2 p.m. The intermediate Shamrocks return to the floor on Saturday, hosting Richmond at 1:30 p.m. at The Q.

In Midget A lacrosse play, Juan de Fuca travels over the Malahat to take on Nanaimo in a 4:30 p.m. tilt this Sunday, then visits Saanich at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 23 at Pearkes Recreation Centre. Back at home the following night, Juan de Fuca hosts Peninsula for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Rugby action returns to the West Shore when the Canada WomenB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Sevens hits the Westhills turf May 27 and 28. For tickets visit .

Engines rev to life at Western Speedway for Westshore Night at the Races on Saturday, featuring sprint cars, stock cars, mini stocks and the Old Timers Racing Association. Grandstands open at 4:30 p.m. with qualifying at 5:30 p.m. Fan Fest gets underway at 6 p.m., time permitting, with racing at 6:30 p.m. Then on Friday, May 26 itB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s the monster trucks, freestyle motocross, drifters and more, starting at 7 p.m.

High school cyclists return to Juan de Fuca Recreation this week to tackle the velodrome in the Track Race on Tuesday, May 23. Check in begins at 3 p.m. with racing starting at 4:45 p.m.

After a break for the Victoria Day long weekend, Friday, May 26 brings the last day of senior girlsB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™ high school rugby play before next weekB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s final jamboree. Catch the Belmont girls on the road at Spectrum where theyB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™ll take on the hosts and Glenlyon Norfolk School.

Victoria and District Div. 1 cricket take to the pitch Sunday, May 28 when Metchosin hosts the United men at 12 p.m. Catch the action at the Metchosin municipal grounds.

From cricket to baseball, check out the next generation of ball players at the inaugural Triangle Baseball May Long Weekend Invitational Tournament for nine and 10-year-olds. Events start with a skills competition at 6 p.m. Friday, May 19 at the Juan de Fuca fields and continue through the weekend.

High-performance baseball play takes the Victoria Premier Eagles on the road this weekend before returning to their home turf Saturday. Catch the Eagles in action at Lambrick Park when they host the White Rock Tritons for doubleheader games at 12:05 and 2:35 p.m. The Victoria Premier Mariners also return to the field May 27, hosting the North Delta Blue Jays in a doubleheader at Layritz Field beginning at 1 and 3:30 p.m.
