LETTER: Canada must stand united against bullies

Canada cannot afford to respond emotionally to Donald Trump by overreacting with aggressive behaviour or under-reacting with passivity

Donald Trump's intimidation tactics are obvious. The international response must be swift and assertive, and collectively we need to be prepared to stand up to him.

We cannot afford to respond emotionally by overreacting with aggressive behaviour or under-reacting with passivity. Surprisingly, both of these emotional responses tend to encourage more bullying.

If we are passive B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ like a deer frozen in the headlights B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ the bully often feels encouraged to repeat their bullying because they may enjoy upsetting you and have learned that they can get away with it. Bullies know this and often make it personal, by criticizing our appearance, intelligence, competence, sanity, morals, and so forth. This can make us question ourselves.

Yet with bullying, itB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s not about you. No one deserves to be bullied. It takes a shift in thinking to realize that there is nothing we did that makes it appropriate to be bullied.

Be careful not to become isolated because we are being bullied. Unfortunately, this is a common reaction. In reality, If one of us is being bullied, we are all being bullied.
