A drug investigation has led West Shore RCMP to a cache of 40 stolen bicycles.

With the wheels set in motion, RCMP carried out a search warrant for a home in the 2800-block of Leigh Road in Langford last Wednesday evening (Aug. 5). The search warrant was executed by members of the Street Crime Unit and general duty officers after a drug investigation was launched.

Police discovered a stash of 40 stolen bicycles some of which were dismantled, tools and a small amount of methamphetamine.

A 23-year-old Langford man was arrested without incident. A 23-year-old Langford woman attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by police. The suspects were said to be well known to police and have been deemed prolific offenders. They are facing a number of charges, ranging from drug possession to possession of property obtained by crime.

Of the 40 stolen bicycles recovered, police have returned a few to their owners, who were able to provide serial numbers. West Shore RCMP spokesman Const. Alex Berube said the goal is to see even more given back.

Sometimes thieves swap parts on stolen bikes to disguise them, he said, which could be why a number of the bikes were dismantled.

With bike theft a growing concern on the West Shore, he encouraged all cyclists to use proper locks and to record their serial numbers.
