In preparation for the 46th annual Victoria Classic Boat Festival in August, the Maritime Museum of British Columbia (MMBC) is seeking local artists to participate in its artist aboard and music programs.
During the weekendfrom Aug. 29 to 31, musicians and visual artists would have the chance to display their work on Victoria's Inner Harbour docks.
"We know that not everyone has a boat," says Anya Zanko, events and development manager at the MMBC. "Everyone loves to look at a beautiful classic or a historic vessel, but not everyone has one themselves and this is the way for people to participate in the festival as participants bringing their own kind of artistic experience to it."
Selected visual artists will be working on the docks, on vessels, and at other different locations where they will paint or sketch using a range of media.
"Any visual media is fantastic and last year we had a pencil artist, two oil artists and an acrylic artist. They used their art to interpret the festival, which was showcased later in October."
Through the festival, artists will also have an opportunity to showcase some of their prints and related sketches or postcards as well as sell their festival works.
"It's a great little art show too," Zanko added.
Additionally, musicians will have the chance to play on the barge at various times during the festival.
Applicants must be artists with a demonstrated interest and background in maritime art or heritage boats; performers applying for the program must have performance experience. They will each receive a $300 honorarium.
On Sunday, Oct. 19, a gala evening and artists' showcase will be held at the Maritime Museum of BC gallery located at 744 Douglas St.
Applications are open to Canadian citizens of all ages; performers under the age of 18 must have a guardian sign on their behalf.
The deadline to apply for the is March 14 at 11:59 p.m.
