The Victoria Historical Society will host a presentation by historian John Price exploring the life of Dr. Victoria Chung, CanadaB次元官网网址檚 first Asian Canadian medical doctor.
The event will take place at James Bay New Horizons, 234 Menzies St., on Feb. 27, starting at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7:15 p.m. Admission is $5 for non-members.
Dr. ChungB次元官网网址檚 one-of-a-kind journey began in Victoria, where she grew up before graduating from the University of Toronto's medical school. She later moved to China in 1923 as a medical missionary. However, after the 1949 revolution, she remained in China, never returning to Canada.
The talk will examine whether this was a self-imposed exile or influenced by CanadaB次元官网网址檚 refusal to recognize ChinaB次元官网网址檚 new government.
Price, a professor emeritus in history at the University of Victoria, is the co-author of A Woman in Between: Searching for Dr. Victoria Chung. He has extensively researched Canada-East Asia relations, settler colonialism, and anti-racism, with opinion pieces published in various Canadian media outlets.
