Saanich police are warning the public of fraud after they received a report of a "suspicious circumstance."

The Saanich Police Department say a resident received a random phone call on July 3 from someone who offered to give them a load of asphalt for free, to which the resident agreed.

When the truck arrived, there was no asphalt and it was full of gravel. The workers who brought it also told the homeowner they were responsible for the bill. The homeowner refused the load and to pay and quickly called the police. 

When officer attended the scene they spoke with both parties and the workers left without incident.

"While a criminal act did not occur during this circumstance, the details around this call are suspicious. We are reminding the public to be wary if you are contacted by someone offering you free construction material. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," noted a news release from Saanich PD.

They urge people who think they are a victim of fraud to call their local police department.
