Dock talk: Esquimalt dives into shoreline options for public use

An Esquimalt staff document outlines each option with priorities taking into account safety, environmental, construction and infrastructure considerations for each potential site.

Esquimalt is exploring the waters of a public, multi-use dock, fishing for information now, and culminating with a report to council anticipated in spring.

Last summer township staff commissioned an options and analysis study to guide installation of a public-use dock.

Over the fall, staff worked with a team of landscape architects including biologists to analyze options and the pros and cons of 18 potential sites on the Gorge Waterway and the southern shoreline of Esquimalt.

Now, staff hopes the public will peruse the options set forth in a document outlining each option with priorities taking into account safety, environmental, construction and infrastructure considerations for each potential site. There is currently no capital funding attached to the project.

With a goal of gathering community input to determine if a dock, or docks, are wanted by the community and where the best location would be, design is not part of this phase as staff look to narrow down potential sites.

Community feedback will be included in a summary report to council with recommendations in early March. The draft report is expected to identify potential locations with rankings and assessments for environmental and cultural impact. It would include technical analysis for construction and maintenance as well as a financial estimate and a community engagement plan.

Esquimalt also lies within the Traditional Territory of the Xwsepsum and Songhees People who continue to steward the region and the culturally significant shorelines. The township says it is in active conversation with both nations.

Residents can learn more during a Jan. 23 open house at the Esquimalt Gorge Pavilion from 3 to 6 p.m. The survey, online at , closes Feb. 10.
