Saanich police statistics for the last three years show officers are increasingly issuing more tickets for speeding, distracted driving and other Motor Vehicle Act infractions.
The data compiled on the departmentB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s road safety dashboard specifically focuses on collisions and enforcement. All statistics are based on reports to police.
Officers issued 4,259 tickets in 2024 with nearly half of them, 2,075, for speeding followed by 303 for distracted driving. In 2023 they issued 3,448 tickets. Of those, 1,569 were for speeding and 350 for distracted driving. In 2022 officers wrote 3,120 tickets B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ 1,605 for speeding and 261 for distracted driving.
Crashes saw a slight increase year-over-year while fatalities remain a reality. Crashes reported to Saanich Police Department in 2024 totalled 1,068 with two fatalities and 174 people injured.
A 55-year old Saanich resident died after crashing their motorcycle in the 200-block of Willis Point Road on June 20 just after 5 p.m.
A major medical event led to a crash and subsequent death of a driver the morning of Dec. 6. Officers were called to the 700-block of Rogers Avenue after a Dodge Caravan crashed into the front porch of a house at a relatively low speed, police said at the time. Officers discovered the driver, a 46-year-old woman, had suffered a major medical event and was pronounced dead at the scene.
In 2023, there were 999 crashes with three fatalities and 217 people sustaining injuries, while the previous year saw two people die on Saanich roads and 281 injured in 1,083 crashes.
The data also shows dangerous interactions between drivers and cyclists as well as pedestrians are trending down in Saanich. However, in 2024 one pedestrian was killed and 18 injured in vehicle incidents.
A 29-year-old woman from Greater Victoria was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit on the Pat Bay Highway on Feb. 2 around 8 p.m. The woman was on foot when she was hit in the 5100-block of Highway 17 B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ near Haliburton Road B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ by the driver of a pickup truck in the northbound lanes, according to Saanich police.
Two people were killed in 2023 with 24 crashes leaving people with injuries. In 2022 there were no fatalities but 62 pedestrians were injured. Crashes between drivers and cyclists have resulted in no fatalities in the past three years; 2024 saw 43 with injuries, in 2023 there were 48 and in 2022, 50 crashes resulted in injuries.
