Sooke Fire Rescue have served Sooke since the early 1900's.

In Sooke, it pays to prevent wildfires, as the district has announced a new rebate program.

Sooke residents can now access up to $1,000 in rebates provided by the FireSmart Rebate Program upon taking steps to protect their homes and property from wildfire.

"The FireSmart Rebate Program is an incredible opportunity for residents to take proactive steps in safeguarding their properties against wildfire," says Madison Crawford, District of Sooke FireSmart Program coordinator.

"Small but impactful changes" can "significantly enhance" a home's resilience, she added.

The district-supported program provides reimbursement for 50 per cent of expenses up to $1,000. These eligible expenses include the removal of combustible vegetation, upgrading landscaping with fire-resistant plants and materials, replacing combustible fencing, deck or siding with alternatives, installing ember-resistant vents and screens, and maintaining defensible space around structures.

The initiative comes from the Union of BC MunicipalitiesB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™ Community Resiliency Investment program, through the FireSmart community funding and support stream.

To qualify, residents first must book a free FireSmart Home Assessment through Sooke Fire Rescue. During the assessment, the district's FireSmart coordinator will identify specific actions property owners can take to reduce wildfires. Residents can book a consultation by calling 250-642-5422.

The district encourages residents to act early as rebates are limited and provided on a first come first serve basis. To learn more residents can visit sooke.ca/firesmart.
