Bike owners are being encouraged by West Shore RCMP to register their beloved two-wheel vehicles.

The RCMP has partnered with Project 529, a free online bike registration program, which already has thousands of bikes from the Capital Regional District (CRD) on its registry.

"Project 529 allows police officers from all over the CRD and beyond to search the registry for lost or stolen bikes and get them back to the rightful owner," said the RCMP in a news release.

To register a bike, the RCMP says to download the Project 529 app on your phone, or visit the website: .

Police have explained anyone who registered their bike with West Shore RCMP prior to Jan. 9, will soon receive a letter in the mail about the switch to the new bike registration program.

Anyone who wishes to keep their bike registered with West Shore RCMP must re-register via the Project 529 app or website.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this switch has caused," said police.

Any bike registration data provided before Jan 9 will be archived by the RCMP for two years, after which it will be destroyed.
