Military exercise to be held in waters off Metchosin

The exercise will not impact typical public access to shorelines and surrounding water bodies

Boaters may notice some increased military activity around Albert Head as military personnel begin a new training exercise in the area.

The exercise is called Roguish Buoy 2025 and will be held from Jan. 21 to Feb. 14, taking place in the waters off of Metchosin's Albert Head.

Roguish Buoy 2025 is the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering/Army Dive CentreB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s annual training event.

"This exercise enables combat divers to practise their skills, tactics and procedures, while also maintaining their high standards of diver certification necessary to support Canadian Armed Forces operations at home and abroad," the Department of National Defence stated in a press release.

The exercise will utilize an underwater demolition range at Rocky PointB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Whirl Bay from Jan. 31 to Feb. 9. To mitigate the effects of explosives, an air bubble curtain will be used. This curtain will protect fish and marine life from the underwater sound pressure created by the blasts.

The army assured that the exercise would be conducted in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, in compliance with safety and environmental protection regulations.

Roguish Buoy will not impact public access to beaches, shorelines and surrounding bodies of water, and poses no risk to the public.
