A new cancer recovery centre honouring Donald MacPherson was unveiled by BC Cancer Foundation on May 15.

B次元官网网址淭his would have been a project very dear to him to be able to repurpose a building that was originally designed from a healthcare perspective,B次元官网网址� DonaldB次元官网网址檚 daughter, Sandra MacPherson said during the event.

Donald MacPherson was the architect for the original building when it was constructed in the 1970s for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. His signature style of incorporating wood, natural light and high ceiling can be observed when you enter the bulding.

The Victoria Integrated Care and Research Pavilion, at 2480 Richmond Rd., is still under construction and scheduled to be completed in early 2025.

B次元官网网址淭his building, purchase and renovation are all covered through community donation,B次元官网网址� said William Litchfield, executive director of BC Cancer Foundation.

BC Cancer began a $15 million campaign in October 2023, raising 80 per cent of the target amount. This allows them to rely on sources other than government money, Litchfield said.

B次元官网网址淭he initial response has been much more positive than we expected,B次元官网网址� he added.

The refurbished building will add 12,000 square feet to the BC Cancer Centre and is a stoneB次元官网网址檚 throw from Royal Jubilee Hospital.

B次元官网网址淭reatment will still be in the main building across the road. And weB次元官网网址檙e freeing up more space there,B次元官网网址� Litchfield said.

Patients will come to the new building for pre-cancer care, during their cancer treatment and after any treatment plans have been completed.

B次元官网网址淥ften, we think of cancer care as just surgery, chemo, radiation. But when we look at the patient, itB次元官网网址檚 more than just the treatment. ItB次元官网网址檚 a holistic piece of healing. And that incorporates the mental health.B次元官网网址�

The new centre will house psychiatrists, counsellors, an oncologist as well as hereditary and genetic counsellors.

B次元官网网址淭hey say youB次元官网网址檝e been diagnosed with breast cancer, and you would do a genetic screening, depending on the results. Talk about the next steps,B次元官网网址� Litchfield said.
