A quick response by firefighters helped keep flames from spreading too far into a Comox residence early Feb 24.

According to Capt. Pascal Lafrenière of Comox Fire Rescue, crews were called out to reports of a vehicle on fire spreading into a home in the 1500 block of Skeena Drive around 12:40 a.m.

The homeowner and his cat were in the structure at the time of the blaze but both escaped without injury.

Lafreniere says the homeowner had initially used a garden hose to put water onto the fire to try to keep it under control until firefighters arrived.

BԪַIt was a challenging layout in terms of the garage and a loft above and trying to get water applied into the roofline and get access to that, especially a second story made it challenging for the crew,BԪַ Lafrenière says.

Lafrenière estimates that approximately 15 per cent of the home was damaged.

RCMP officers at the scene searched nearby homes for surveillance cameras but Lafrenière says it hasnBԪַt been determined whether or not the cause was suspicious but that it didnBԪַt appear to be.
