It wouldnB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™t feel like summer for classical music lovers without the Sooke Philharmonic OrchestraB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s annual outdoor Fling.

Michael Klazek will conduct the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra for this yearB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s event, which marks the 25th anniversary of the Fling.

The concert will get started with a performance by the Harmony Project Sooke B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ SD 62 String Orchestra, an ensemble of young musicians who earned the Adjudicators Choice Award at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival in April.

David Stewart, the soloist for this yearB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Fling, will play Norwegian composer Johan SvendsenB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Romance, a popular summer concert selection. Stewart has lived in Sooke since he retired as a concertmaster in Bergen, Norway, several years ago.

Composer Brad Howland, the principal trombonist with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, will perform music from compositions depicting the regionB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s birds.

The orchestra will join forces for enduring favourites such as HaydnB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s London Symphony, MozartB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Marriage of Figaro, MendelssohnB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s FingalB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Cave, and the SPOB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s version of Over the Rainbow. TchaikovskyB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s spectacular 1812 Overture has been chosen for the concertB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s grand finale.

The Fling takes place on July 9 at Ed Macgregor Park at 2:30 p.m.

Admission is by donation, and there will be a 50/50 draw for a one-night stay at the Prestige Hotel and lawn chairs from Village Foods.

Organizers suggest bringing a blanket or chair and a sun hat to the park, which has plenty of space for the event. The concert will move to the Sooke Community Hall in the event of rain.

The Fling is sponsored by the District of Sooke, and Sooke Mayor Maja Tait will be on hand to welcome people to the event.
