It was mostly quiet on the West Shore front on Halloween night, as West Shore RCMP responded to just 67 calls, down from 103 the year before. There were no major calls other than a pipe bomb incident earlier in the week that caused some property damage, but no injuries. The CRDB次元官网网址檚 fireworks bylaw instituted in 2005, which gives authorities an additional tool to employ when there are issues, is said to be a factor in the decrease.

School District 62 is instituting policies to curb Internet bullying. Students caught sending hateful or insulting messages to other students via e-mail, text messaging or chat rooms now face suspension or expulsion, loss of computer privileges and possible police action. The policy wasnB次元官网网址檛 triggered by an incident, but from general concern from school districts in Greater Victoria, says Ron Warder, SD 62B次元官网网址檚 director of instruction.

1996

A man who stole over $14,000 from welfare over 16 months is sentenced to one year in jail after pleading guilty in Western Communities provincial court. Crown counsel Duncan Campbell tells court the father of five received $14,605.60 from the Ministry of Social Services during which time he worked as a truck driver. When he gets out of jail, Garry Harding will have to pay back the full amount he stole, Judge Brian McKenzie says.

The Langford Legion loses its last First World War veteran, as Fred Rennie dies at the age of 100. Rennie had lived in Colwood for 37 years and fought in both the First and Second World Wars.

1986

Fire sweeps through a Langford home, but doesnB次元官网网址檛 destroy the humour of resident Lynette Randall. B次元官网网址淵ou want to know something funny? The toilet paper didnB次元官网网址檛 burn,B次元官网网址 she says. Her family salvages what they can from the fire, which destroyed their split-level home on Happy Valley Road. Two bathrooms and a bedroom are the only rooms that remain intact. The fire appears to have started in a space separating the home and garage.

Also making news the week of Nov. 4, 1986:

Some 75 people grill seven election hopefuls at an all-candidates meeting about their ability to get things done. Multiple residents ask candidates whether decisions would be made more quickly under their guidance if elected.
