'Lets get it done': Langford rallies together for veterans crossing tribute

Two crosswalks will hopefully be transformed in time for Remembrance Day

When suggesting an idea to create two 'veterans crossings' in Langford to honour local war heroes, Dianna Seaton was not prepared for the response.

"[This is a] great way to honour our veterans, past, present and especially those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, said Seaton in an online post, sharing a photo of a B次元官网网址榬emembrance crossingB次元官网网址 in Hamilton, Ont., painted red and white, with the black shadow of a soldier, above the motto, B次元官网网址楲est we forgetB次元官网网址.

Once shared online, the idea snowballed into a community effort to create two permanent crossings in Langford, hopefully in time for Remembrance Day.

Overwhelmed by the support and offers of help, Seaton says she has been reminded of B次元官网网址渢he old daysB次元官网网址 in Langford, before there was a municipal government.

B次元官网网址淏ack then it was the legion, the fire department, the RCMP and the churches that just took care of everybody,B次元官网网址 she said. B次元官网网址淚f something needed to be done, weB次元官网网址檇 work together as a team, make some phone calls, and it happened.B次元官网网址

B次元官网网址淭hatB次元官网网址檚 who Langford is B次元官网网址 a community that gets things done,B次元官网网址 she adds.

And Seaton is not wrong.

In response, Ryan Oakley, the owner of True Northern Group: Estate Liquidation Services, has offered to donate the manpower for the project, while financial donations have already begun to pour in.

Former mayor Stew Young and LangfordB次元官网网址檚 Royal Legion president Norm Scott have also joined Seaton in her campaign.

The group wants to transform the weathered-looking crossing on Aldwynd Road, next to Veterans Memorial Park, into a permanent tribute to LangfordB次元官网网址檚 veterans.

They also want to create a similar, new crossing outside the Langford Legion, on Station Avenue. Discussions with the City of Langford for a crossing at this point have been underway since July, so the group is hoping the council will be open to a change in design.

B次元官网网址淚t will show that Langford cares about the veterans,B次元官网网址 said Scott, who also hopes the crossings will be a daily reminder for the community to not just remember veterans, but also anyone they have lost in their lives.

Seaton and Scott will meet with the cityB次元官网网址檚 engineering staff on Thursday (Oct. 29) to discuss moving the project forward.

B次元官网网址淣o matter what the bottom line is, if we get the approval, this will be done,B次元官网网址 said Scott.

B次元官网网址淟et's get it done,B次元官网网址 added Seaton.

Donations for the veterans crossing project can be made at Langford Legion, 761 Station Ave. Any excess funds raised will be given to the poppy campaign.
