The City of Colwood decides that itB次元官网网址檚 too expensive to replace its aging fire hall on Metchosin Road, opting instead to spend $1.5 million on a seismic upgrade of the existing building. The estimated $2.9-million price tag proved too rich for Colwood councilB次元官网网址檚 blood, with the exception of Coun. Jason Nault, who voiced concern that the city was half-rebuilding a 20-year-old structure.

Also making headlines the week of Nov. 14, 2004: A proposal planned for the corner of Jacklin and Sooke roads would see two 12-storey residential/commercial buildings take over the southwest point of the busy intersection. The development is the first of its kind for Langford, which had previously approved a four-storey building for the site.

And, the Belmont Bulldogs senior boys soccer team was set to battle Oak Bay for the Colonist Cup city title, having already gained a berth into the Vancouver Island championships.

Nearby residents are relieved to hear that a proposal by Budget Steel to use lands owned by the Victoria Fish and Game Protective Association off the Malahat for burying non-recyclable automobile waste in clay-filled cells was shot down by association members. The group had previously given the company the OK to pursue Ministry of Environment approval for the idea. But a packed association AGM found members strongly opposed to the proposal over fears of the potential for leachate to escape from the buried cells into watersheds and wells.

Also making headlines the week of Nov. 14, 1994: Langford Mayor Stew Young points to the Royal Roads Military College lands as a perfect location for a new police station, swimming pool, library and/or schools. But Colwood mayor John Bergbusch says the ideas are premature, adding the release of Royal Roads lands for public use will happen eventually and most of the leading proposals for the property call for a post-secondary educational institution of some kind. And, the Juan de Fuca Atom rep hockey team coached by Pete Zubersky plays themselves onto the provincial AAA hockey map, after losing the championship final in overtime at a prestigious tournament in Surrey.

A committee of people favouring the joint incorporation of Langford and Colwood joins the pre-referendum fray. Proponents say the combined municipality would have more power regionally than under the current system, with the two districts having just one director each at the Capital Regional District table. Their argument is that if residents reject the joint incorporation, the CRD, by provincial edict, will be left to pay for the governance and servicing of Langford and Colwood, not a more localized body.
