There may be development encroaching around Burnside Watkiss Park, but a group of dedicated volunteers is recruiting others to come and help preserve native species in this green space at the corner of those two streets in View Royal.
An alien plant control work party is planned for this Saturday (Nov. 19) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The plan is to remove as much of the fast-growing plants such as English ivy, spurge laurel and others so that native trees and other plants can thrive in the park and not be choked off.
No previous experience is necessary to join the work party, and tools and gloves are provided. Volunteers may bring their own pruners and loppers if they like. Reminders to dress for the weather and for working around thorny shrubs. Some refreshments and light snacks will be provided.
Children are welcome but must be supervised, and volunteers are asked to leave pets at home. For more information, contact Chris at restorevr@gmail.com.
