A dozen or so University of Victoria students got their hands dirty and spent the afternoon of Oct. 1 working in the community garden at Pacifica Housing in Langford as part of the schoolBԪַs fourth annual Project Serve Day.
In addition to Pacifica Housing, a non-profit organization that provides affordable housing for families and individuals in need, the schoolBԪַs 300-plus volunteers worked with a long list of community groups in Greater Victoria as part of the initiative, including Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the Boys and Girls Club and Woodwynn Farms.
The site on Goldstream Avenue is one of the PacificaBԪַs many housing complexes in the region and the garden, located towards the back of the property, is used by all West Shore Pacifica residents.
BԪַFood is grown and incorporated into community meals BԪַ itBԪַs essentially a big community initiative,BԪַ said Sacha Sauve, manager of fund development and communications with Pacifica. She added that itBԪַs a good way to create sustainable food and BԪַget people together and outside, getting their hands dirty and all the therapeutic benefits that come with that.BԪַ
