Black Press and Staples, in partnership with Camosun College, are proud to recognize some of the great teachers found here in the Capital Region. We asked our readers to nominate teachers who have gone above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of the students they teach.

Darren Russell is the principal at Dunsmuir middle school. Here is what nominator Mae Juleff had to say about him:

I would like Darren Russell to be recognized as a very compassionate and caring person with his peers, co-workers and students. Darren always makes time for everyone whether the concern is something little or something that requires lots of investigating, he is patient, thorough and fair.

Darren started his teaching career at Dunsmuir Junior High School and has been there for most of his career. The school has seen many changes and Darren has been there for all of them. Dunsmuir changed from a junior high school to a middle school with grades 7 to 9 and then changed to grades 6 to 8. Darren became vice principal and is now principal of Dunsmuir after his many years of teaching Physical Education at the school.

Darren is greatly respected by the students, staff and district administrators. Darren has participated in many activities and encouraged students and staff to have the confidence to try new things and is always there for guidance if needed.

Darren is especially understanding and always willing to lend a hand when dealing with the special people in the Dunsmuir community and certainly has a way of making them feel comfortable in their achievements.

Darren has faced several challenges throughout his career, both personal and professional, he has handled everything quietly and with dignity.

I have retired, but if ever a wish could be granted, it would be to turn back the age clock so I could once again be part of DarrenB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s team.

Look for our Great Teachers special section running June 21 which will recognize the three teachers selected as this yearB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s representatives as well as list all of the West Shore nominees.
