Learning from Metis Aunties key focus in Victoria book launch

Russell Books hosts a launch for Around the Kitchen Table, Aug. 21

A collection of essays, poems, personal stories and art by and for Metis women launches with creators on hand in Victoria.

Editors Laura Forsythe and Jennifer Markides, two Metis professors, were inspired to write Around the Kitchen Table: Metis AuntiesB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™ Scholarship when they noticed how few Metis-focused academic texts they came across during their studies.

The pair set out to bring together work by new and established scholars, artists, storytellers and community leaders that reflects the diversity of research created by Metis women.

Throughout the book, Jennifer and Laura have created a heartfelt and accessible community of Métis thought with writing from Emma LaRocque, Jennifer Adese, Chantal Fiola and others.

It covers an expansive range of disciplines including social work, education, history, health care, urban studies, sociology, archeology, and governance. Contributors bring their own stories to explorations of spirituality, material culture, colonialism, land-based education, sexuality, language, and representation.

During the Victoria launch on Aug. 21, Forsythe and Markides will be joined by contributors Lucy Fowler, and Amanda Lavallee.

Russell Books, 747 Fort St., hosts the Around the Kitchen Table launch at 7 p.m.
