If youB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™re wondering what the smoke is coming from Rocky Point on the Department of National Defence property in Metchosin over the next few months, members will be doing controlled burns of removed invasive plant materials.
An approximately five-hectare section of land has been cleared of plants, as a way of improving and restoring military training areas. The invasive species removed were mostly gorse.
To dispose of the material, controlled burning of large piles will happen in two- to four-day periods starting this month and continuing through February.
Burning will only be done on days when the weather conditions and the ventilation index are determined favourable, as DND expects that considerable smoke will be generated.
A reminder will be posted on the CFB Esquimalt Facebook page the day before burning is to commence.
