Vikes remain undefeated, advance to Canada West semifinals with 21-0 record

The Vikes showed resilience and depth as they fought past the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades

The University of Victoria Vikes menBԪַs basketball team is now 21-0 after defeating the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades in front of a packed home crowd during the Canada West quarterfinals.

BԪַYou gotta bring 40 minutes, and you gotta be prepared to fight the entire way,BԪַ said Vikes head coach Murphy Burnatowski.

BԪַCredit to themBԪַfor most of the game, it was really close, but we were able to pull away at the end of the day.BԪַ

The team was led by Ethan Boag, whose 19 points helped propel the Vikes to a 106-84 win, earning them a spot in the Canada West semifinals next week. The team also demonstrated impressive depth, with Dylan Gage contributing 14 points and an assist in just 13 minutes of floor time.

While the Vikes won by a decisive 22 points, the Cascades looked competitive for much of the game, even leading 27-26 at the end of the first quarter. Five minutes into the second, the Vikes had taken a seven-point lead and continued to stifle the CascadesBԪַ offence, entering halftime up 53-36.

The CascadesBԪַ offense came back to life in the third quarter, putting up 31 points, but the Vikes never let things get close again and maintained their lead for the remainder of the game.

The team will now prepare to host the Canada West semifinals, next weekend (Feb. 28 - March. 2). As the team looks to semi-finals Burnatowski has faith in his team no matter what challenge lies ahead.

BԪַThese guys have been around the block a lot of times. WeBԪַre always gonna get the other teamBԪַs best shot, and we gotta prepare for that every single round,BԪַ he said.

BԪַThis group works extremely hard. ItBԪַs got really good leaders who have led the way for the young guys. One of our biggest players today was a guy who doesnBԪַt even get that many minutesBԪַDylan had a career high tonight.BԪַ
