Saanich's Spectrum snares Island AAAA basketball crown

St. Michaels University claimed the AA championship, Wellington won AAA, and Spectrum earned the AAAA title for the first time since 1990

Some of the best boys' high school basketball players from the Island were showcased over the weekend with a trio of championships taking place. 

Saanich's Lambrick Park played host to the AA tournament, Vic High entertained the AAA championships, and Nanaimo's Dover Bay hosted the AAAA's. 

AAAA action saw Saanich's Spectrum Thunder knock off the Oak Bay Bays 86-67 in the final, while the host Dolphins claimed bronze. All three will head to the provincial championships in Langley.

In the Island final, Justin Hinrichsen led Spectrum with 26 points and Tyler Felt scored 21. For the Bays, Toren Franklin scored 26 and Diem Orser scored 20.

The local trio of Hinrichsen, Felt and Franklin recently committed to the University of Victoria's men's basketball team. 

Felt was named tournament MVP, as well as the best defensive player.  

First-team all-stars were Franklin and Orser from Oak Bay, Hinrichsen and J. Elijah Helman from Spectrum, and Frank Linder from Dover. Second-team-all-stars were Hudson Trood and Joe Linder from Dover, Simon Wiwcharuk-Burr from Oak Bay, Thomas Okusimba and Owen Duncan from Claremont. 

St. Michael University School (SMU) weathered the storm in the all-Saanich AA finals, slipping past Pacific Christian School 81-50. 

Davis Hardy paced SMU with 25 points in the final, Dani Pelyhe added 22, and Jack Driscoll chipped in with 15. 

Hardy was named the tournament MVP, while Driscoll claimed the best defensive player honours. 

SMU, joined by Pacific Christian and Brentwood College, will serve as the Island's representatives at the B.C. provincial championships in Langley. 

AA first-team-all-stars were Pelyhe from SMU, Jed Umaren and Tommy Reems from Pacific Christian, Jackson Lust from Brentwood College, and Solomon Anderson from Lambrick Park. Second-team-all-stars were Elliot Mairet from SMU, Judah Henkel from Pacific Christian, Troy Preston from Highland, Adam Shi from Lambrick Park and Jackson Lenarcic from Brentwood College.  

In AAA action, Nanaimo's Wellington claimed the tournament crown with an 83-70 victory over Courtenay's Mark Isfeld. 

Wellington's Grayson Ritzland posted 30 points in the final, helping him earn tournament MVP. 

Sooke's Edward Milne will join the two north-Island squads in the provincial tournament after they took down Kwalikum Secondary School in the bronze medal game. 

Malakai Hills posted 32 points in the win, while Heath White notched 17 points, leading to tournament all-star team honours for the pair from Edward Milne. 

Wellington, Mark Isfeld and Edward Milne will compete at the provincial championships. 

All three of the provincial championships will take place from March 5 to 8 at the Langley Events Centre.
