Peninsula speed demons ready to hit the ice at skating nationals

Paulina Davydova and Ross Mathewson are competing at the 2025 Canadian Youth Long Track Championships on Feb. 7-9.

Two speed skaters from the Peninsula Speed Skating Club are heading to Fort St. John to compete at the 2025 Canadian Youth Long Track Championships.

Ross Mathewson and Paulina Davydova will represent B.C. at the skating event on Feb. 7-9 at the Pomeroy Sports Centre Oval where 24 of the fastest youth speed skaters from across the country will compete in each age division.

Mathewson and Davydova, seeded 8th and 9th respectively in their age group, qualified after winning the silver at the overall provincial championships competing in all five distances.

This will be Mathewson's second national competition, after qualifying in Quebec City last season and winning the 1500-meter and the International Skating Union (ISU) mass start race with a 100-meter lead. He also placed second in the 500-meter and 300-meter distances and will compete in the Youth 12 category.

Davydova will be competing for the first time at Youth Nationals in the Youth 13 category after placing second overall in the five distances.

Both speed skaters train at the Panorama Recreation Centre in North Saanich and are Peninsula Speed Skating Club members.

The at Fort St, John, home of , features skaters ages 11 to 13.  For young skaters, it provides an introduction to competition at the national level and a chance to compete on the national stage as representatives of their province or territory.
