Oak Bay narrowly misses bronze in third annual Vikes invitational basketball tourney

In a tournament filled with unknown competition, the Oak Bay Bays senior boys basketball team narrowly missed a bronze medal at the third annual Vikes Alumni Senior Boys Basketball Invitational, Dec. 28 to 30.

Vancouver College edged the locals 81-76.

The first two rounds of the tournament had the Bays up against out-of-province teams. They started with a commanding 116 - 65 win over ReginaBԪַs Luther College, before an 86 - 76 semi-final loss to Cambridge OntarioBԪַs St. Benedict. The gold medal game had St. Benedict up against EdmontonBԪַs Harry Ainlay High School, with 800 people in attendance. Harry Ainlay went on to take home the gold, 75 - 70.

SaanichBԪַs Claremont Secondary was the only other Victoria team participating this year. Like the Bays, ClaremontBԪַs first two games were against out-of-province teams. They lost to eventual champions Harry Ainlay in the first game, and Kirkland WABԪַs Juanita in game two. Claremont finished the tournament with a 86-58 win over KelownaBԪַs Rutland Secondary.

Joseph Reyes won ClaremontBԪַs team award, while Ewan Mackenzie took home the honour for Oak Bay.
