JOCK TALK: Sports fields, courts stay busy

Plenty of action on school courts, area fields in the week ahead

The West ShoreB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s rugby pitch will be filled with hard-hitting action this weekend.

While the women have the week off, in local Div. 1 menB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s play, Westshore Valhallians take on the visiting UVic Norsemen at the West Shore Recreation Centre fields beginning at 1 p.m. Oct. 31. The B.C. Premier League hits the pitch at 2:45 p.m., with the University of Victoria Vikes visiting the Valhallians, also at Juan de Fuca.

In Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League play, the Westshore Wolves start their weekend today (Oct. 30) with an away game against the Peninsula Panthers. The puck drops at 6:30 p.m. at Panorama Arena.

On Wednesday, Nov. 4 the Wolves host the Kerry Park Islanders at 7 p.m. at The Q Centre. Finishing the week on Friday, Nov. 6, the Wolves head to Saanich to take on the Braves at 6:30 p.m. at Pearkes Arena.

The B.C. Hockey LeagueB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Victoria Grizzlies continue to be busy at home this week, hosting the Cowichan Valley Capitals at 7 p.m. tonight at The Q Centre. The teams will enjoy a re-match the following Friday, Nov. 6, when the Grizz once again host the Capitals, once again at 7 p.m.

In high school rugby action, the Belmont Bulldogs football team hosts South Delta on Friday, Oct. 30 at Westhills Stadium at 5 p.m.

High school volleyball is well into playoff mode. Royal Bay hosts the junior boys (Grade 9-10) Lower Island playoffs next Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 4 and 5, while the cityB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s junior girls teams open their playoffs on Monday Nov. 2.

The senior girls teams are done with local playoffs, but still await matches to determine Island tourney rankings. Belmont and Royal Bay senior boys play power pools next week then separate into their AA and AA designations for Lower Island playoffs the following week.

Middle school basketball will be busy next Monday, Nov. 2.

Dunsmuir girlsB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™ 7/8 team hosts Gordon Head at 3:45 p.m., while the Spencer girlsB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™ 7/8 squad visits SaanichB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Royal Oak at 3:45 p.m.

SpencerB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s boysB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™ 7/8 team hosts Cedar Hill at 3:45 p.m., while the Dunsmuir boysB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™ 7/8 hosts Colquitz at 5:15 p.m.

On Wednesday, Nov. 4, itB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s an all West Shore match-up when the Spencer girlsB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™ 7/8 squad hits the hardwood at Dunsmuir at 3:45 p.m., followed by the boysB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™ 7/8 at 5:15 p.m.
