JOCK TALK: High school sports get underway in region

West Shore hockey fans have a lot to cheer next week.

The Westshore Wolves stay in town despite playing a game on the road. The Wolves host the Comox Valley Glacier Kings Wednesday, Sept. 27, hitting The Q Centre ice at 7 p.m. The Wolves next head to Pearkes Arena to take on the Saanich Braves on Friday, Sept. 29 at 6:30 p.m.

The Victoria Grizzlies return home Friday, Sept. 29, hosting the Vernon Vipers for a 7 p.m. face-off at The Q Centre. On Saturday, Sept. 30, the Grizz host the Langley Rivermen at 7 p.m.

This week marks the end of the summer season for Western Speedway, which hosts the Hyrdoforce Excavating Championship Night Saturday, Sept. 23. During the eveningB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s events, champions will be crowned for Demo Cars/Trucks, Mini Figure 8s, Bombers and Claimers, but the night will also feature a total destruction event and fireworks to cap the 2017 season. The Westcastle United menB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s soccer team returns to the pitch Saturday, Sept. 23, welcoming Bays United for an 8 p.m. game at Westhills Stadium. WomenB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Division 1 soccer hits the field Saturday, Sept. 23 with Juan de Fuca FC facing Castaways FC at 6 p.m. at PISE.

While Westshore rugbyB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s senior teams have the weekend off, Westshore 3 kicks off against the UVic Saxons at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Juan de Fuca field.

While the Westshore Rebels on the road this weekend,

Varsity football brings Vancouver College to Goudy Field for a 4 p.m. game today (Sept. 22), against home team Belmont. The tilt will be followed by a second home appearance next Friday, Sept. 29, when Belmont welcomes South Delta, also at 4 p.m.

As this yearB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s high school sports season gets underway, West Shore cross country runners compete in the first race of the school year on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at Lambrick Park. Racing begins at 3:45 p.m. with the junior boys division (4K), all girls at 4 p.m. (4K) and senior boys at 4:05 p.m. (6K).

In high school boys soccer, Thursday Sept. 28 has Royal Bay visiting Oak Bay at 3:30 p.m.

Finally, thereB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s still time for West Shore basketball fans to catch the Toronto RaptorsB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™ intersquad game at the University of Victoria next week. Tickets for the Sept. 28 game sold out quickly, but standing room spots will be released at 5:30 p.m. on game night, at the CARSA Membership Services Counter. Ticket-holders are asked to access the event via the Game Day Entrance on Gabriola Road (closest entrance to the parkade and McKenzie Avenue), with doors opening at 6 p.m. Proceeds from the evening go to the Golf for Kids Charity Classic.
