Fraser Valley rugby players come together to dominate Summer Games

Zone 3 squad included mostly Langley and Abbotsford girls

Maple Ridge may not have had any players on the girls rugby team, but they still had a lot to be proud of on the pitch as the Fraser Valley team put on quite a strong performance at the BC Summer Games.

Zone 3 coach Stuart Crowley explained that unfortunately there were no Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows girls who tried out for the team, but that there was plenty of talent from the nearby communities of Langley and Abbotsford.

He said that with the current state of the province's rugby programs, a lot of the top-tier talent is located south of the Fraser River, making the Zone 3 team a force to be reckoned with.

And although this particular group of girls had never played on a team altogether before the start of the Summer Games, Crowley said that this didn't impact their ability to perform as many of the girls were already quite familiar with one another in one way or another.

"A lot of these girls have played together in club leagues and stuff like that, but not all together like this," said Crowley.

The Fraser River team had a particularly strong showing against Vancouver-Coastal on Friday, July 19, with the Zone 3 squad bursting out of the gate and scoring a try on their very first possession.

They didn't slow down there either, playing quite well throughout their other games as well.
