The provinceB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s top high school distance runners go head-to-head in Colwood on Saturday (Nov. 1) for the B.C. Cross Country Championships.
Runners in four categories will traverse the paths and hills at the West Shore Parks and Recreation complex starting at 10 a.m. with the junior girlsB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™ 4.3-kilometre race.
The junior boys hit the trail at 10:45 a.m. for their 5.3 km event, followed at 11:30 by the senior girls (4.3 km) and at 12:15 by the senior boys (6.4 km).
Evan Szabo carries the Belmont banner into the competition as the lone runner to qualify for the event from the recent Island championships around Beaver Lake. He finished the 6.2-kilometre race 25th out of 95 runners in a time of 24 minutes, 22 seconds.
The race winner was Brendan Hoff of Reynolds in a time of 21:04.
Other Bulldogs finishers included Elena Lopez (63rd, 21:52), Angela Zhuo (75th, 22:38), Shayla Ross (83rd, 24:08), Claire Church (86th, 26:14) and Niki Lam (87th, 26:26) in senior girls; Mitchell Coulombe (57th, 18:49) in junior boys and Jessica Coulombe (44th, 23:33) in junior girls.
Spectators are welcome to head down and cheer the runners on. The awards ceremony takes place at 1:30 p.m. at Spectrum Community School.
