Belmont girls win twice at B.C. rugby championships

Up-and-comers in rugby spotlight between Canada Womens Sevens matches

CanadaB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s womenB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s national rugby  program wasnB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™t the only one on display on the West Shore this past weekend.

The B.C. High School Girls Rugby Association played the third/fourth game and Cup final for its provincial championship in between matches at the Canada WomenB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Sevens tournament at Westhills Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Brentwood College came away the victors, beating Abbotsford secondary 15-7 in a hard-fought match. Lake City from Williams Lake B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ hometown of senior womenB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s sevens player Kayla Moleschi B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ took third with a 32-10 win over Cowichan.

The Belmont Bulldogs also competed in the event, opening with a 17-0 win over Nechako Valley at the University of VictoriaB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Wallace Field on Friday.

The Bulldogs followed that up with a slim 7-0 loss to VancouverB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Yale and a 22-5 loss to Valleyview of Kamloops, but rebounded to beat Handsworth of North Vancouver 29-5 in the Bowl quarter-finals.

SaturdayB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Bowl semifinal at Centennial Stadium saw the Bulldogs drop a 22-5 decision to Elgin Park of Surrey, who went on to beat fellow mainland squad McRoberts for the Bowl title.

The dayB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s other final games saw Oak Bay take the Shield with a 20-0 win over Handsworth, and Vanier from Courtenay down Yale 17-0 for the Plate.
