UPDATE THURSDAY, JAN. 2: Vernon's Jaelyn Cotter and Jim Cotter now know their playoff opponent at the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials in Nova Scotia.

Team Jocelyn Peterman/Brett Gallant (Chestermere, Alta.) and Team Lisa Weagle/John Epping (Ottawa/Toronto) claimed victories in the Page 1-2 qualifying round Thursday evening, and will go head to head Friday at 3 p.m. Pacific in the Page 1-2 playoff.

From there, the winner will advance to SaturdayB次元官网网址檚 10 a.m. gold-medal game, while the loser drops into the semifinal Saturday at 6 a.m.

Team Peterman/Gallant stretched its win streak to eight with an 8-4 win over Team Rachel Homan/Brendan Bottcher (Beaumont, Alta./Spruce Grove, Alta.), while Team Weagle/Epping was a 10-5 winner over Team Brittany Tran/Rylan Kleiter (Calgary/Saskatoon).

ItB次元官网网址檒l be a rematch of a New YearB次元官网网址檚 Eve round-robin game in which Team Peterman/Gallant prevailed 6-3, thanks largely to a steal of two in the fifth end.

Team Homan/Bottcher will battle Team Jaelyn Cotter/Jim Cotter at 10 a.m. Pacific Friday, while Team Tran/Kleiter is up against Team Jennifer Jones/Brent Laing (Barrie, Ont.).

The two winners will play in the Page 3-4 playoff Friday at 3 p.m. Pacific for a spot in SaturdayB次元官网网址檚 semifinal.

A Thursday morning rally has put the Vernon father-daughter duo of Jim Cotter and Jaelyn Cotter into the playoffs at the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials in Liverpool, NS.

The Cotters came back from 4-0 down after three ends to defeat Riley Sandham and Brendan Craig from Guelph, Ont. 8-7 in their final preliminary round game.

The win, coupled with a Brett Gallant/Jocelyn Peterman (Calgary) 9-6 victory over Kadriana Lott and Colton Lott, clinched third place in Pool B of the 16-team event for the Vernon rink.

Jaelyn and Jim, along with the Lotts, both finished at 4-3, but the Cotters get third place because of their round-robin win (7-5) against the Lotts on the Trials' opening day Monday, Dec. 30.

Gallant/Peterman finished atop Pool B at 7-0. Lisa Weagle and John Epping of Toronto claimed second place at 5-2.

The top three teams in each eight-team pool advance to the playoffs, which begin tonight (Thursday). First place in Pool A, the pair of Brittany Tran/Rylan Kleiter of Calgary/Saskatoon takes on second place in Pool B, Weagle/Epping, and first in Pool B (Gallant-Peterman) will meet the second-place rink from Pool A, Edmonton's Rachel Homan/Brendan Bottcher.

The two winners advance to the one-two Page playoff game. The losers drop down to play one of the two third-place teams in the Page Playoff three-vs-four qualifiers. Jennifer Jones/Brent Laing of Barrie, Ont. finished third in Pool A.

Team Cotter/Cotter will meet the loser of the Peterman/Gallant-Homan/Bottcher tussle Friday, Jan. 3, at 10 a.m. Pacific, while the third-place team in Pool A, Team Jones/Laing, will play the loser of Tran/Kleiter vs. Weagle-Epping.

After falling behind Thursday, the Cotters got back into their match against Sandham/Craig by scoring three in the fourth end. The Vernon duo then took the lead in the fifth end with a steal of three for a 6-4 advantage.

Sandham/Craig tied the game with a deuce in the sixth with last rock, but the Cotters answered with a pair of their own in the seventh for an 8-6 lead, and held the opponents to a single point in the final end.

The tournament finishes Saturday, Jan. 4, with the winner moving on to represent Canada at the  April 26-May 3 in Fredericton, N.B.

That event also  in Italy, and if Canada qualifies for the Games, it will be the Trials winner in Liverpool who will go to Italy.

VERNON CURLING CLUB

The Barry Amies Men's Open Bonspiel kicks off Thursday night at the Vernon Curling Club.

For the first time in a number of years, it's a full field of 48 rinks taking part.

The final is set for 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5.

The bonspiel is named in memory of Amies, a longtime Vernon Curling Club member.
