Paving over farmland a big risk

I went over to the Olympic peninsula in Washington State last week. The local newspaper headlined that planning needs to remember to allow for places to grow food. They still grow more than they eat, and they want to stay that way.

When I first came to Vancouver Island, the Island shipped fruits and vegetables as far east as Winnipeg. Not any more. We are at the mercy of foreign countries that grow most of what we consume, and we are at risk of their fast-growing  populations cutting off food export.

We have to do as much as we can to save agricultural land. It is a great temptation  to build on flat land, which food growable land usually is. For example Langford council permitted the end to HullB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Field (now City Centre Park) not that many years ago.
