Re: and (Gazette, Nov. 22)

What is a BԪַsingle useBԪַ plastic bag? Look down the bread aisle. Plastic keeps bakery goods fresh; paper wonBԪַt do. I break a loaf into four, using old bags, and freeze three. The produce section has rolls of plastic bags needed to separate and seal items, especially onions. The sturdy bags at government liquor stores are ideal for kitty litter.

Bedding comes in zippered bags, good for storage as well separating items during travel. On and on. Yes, there is a global problem with plastic, calling for a bio-degradable solution. And yes, I use cloth bags.

Meantime, the main effect of a ban on checkout bags is that customers will put a carton of zippered bags in the shopping cart. Banning a small fraction is feel-good political tokenism.
