Re: Environment plan coming for proposed rock quarry (Gazette, July 20)
We welcome an environmental management plan for the open-pit mine proposed by OK Industries for the south Highlands. However, a smaller operation will still require extensive blasting to remove the desired rock.
OK Industries has not proved that this is safe so close to two toxic waste disposal sites at Millstream Meadows and Tervita Highwest.
There are still risks to the underlying aquifer and water supply of Highlands residents. OK Industries have already shown themselves to be bad neighbours at their existing site, with dust and noise affecting the health and well-being of nearby residents and visitors to Bear Mountain, and this will continue for another 25 years with the proposed mine.
This is still the wrong land use on the wrong site. The property is zoned greenbelt (GB2) and does not permit industrial activity.
This proposed mine does not have social licence in our community and should not go ahead.
