Construction of the new View Royal public safety building on Island Highway came about after one undemocratic process and one democratic one

Re: (Gazette, June 12)

The people of View Royal can rejoice in their new public safety building and in the triumph of democracy. They turned out and defeated their townBԪַs extremely undemocratic BԪַAlternative Approval ProcessBԪַ to borrow $8.1 million for the new fire hall. This forced the town to hold a proper democratic referendum in which everyone could vote yes or no.

To win the referendum, the town had to reduce the borrowing amount from $8.1 million to $5.4 million, which saved View Royal taxpayers millions in debt interest payments over many years. We can all rejoice in the new fire hall and that people made democracy work in View Royal. Congratulations, well done.
