Wheelchair-bound man injured in hit-and-run

Driver backed up and drove around quadriplegic man, leaving him lying on the ground

A quadriplegic man suffered a broken arm yesterday in a hit-and-run in downtown Victoria.

The man was crossing Fort Street on a flashing hand signal in his motorized wheelchair around 2 p.m. when the driver of a blue vehicle turned left from Douglas Street, knocking the man over.

Witnesses said the driver then backed up the vehicle and drove around the man, leaving him lying on the ground.

"Thankfully, numerous passersby stopped to help the victim, but none provided a license plate of the offending vehicle," said Const. Mike Russell. "The only description of the vehicle was that it was blue."

Police are canvassing the area for video surveillance that may lead them to the driver, and are asking any witnesses to call their non-emergency line of 250-995-7654 or anonymously on Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
