West Shore mountain biker takes bronze in first Commonwealth Games

The Canadian Mountain Biking team, that trains for part of the year at Bear Mountain, will be bringing back a medal from the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

In her first Commonwealth Games, Haley Smith, took home bronze in the womenB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s division. She had a time of 1:20:26 for the 27.6 kilometre race. The course was six laps of a 4.6 km track.

On SmithB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s profile for the 2018 Games she stated her most memorable moments in mountain biking to date have been a top 10 finish at the World Cup in the Czech Republic in 2015 and winning the U23 National Championship in the same year. Now, she will be able to add a bronze medal at the Games to her list of notable performances.

SmithB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s teammate and national team veteran, Emily Batty, placed fourth with a time of 1:21:02 for the course. Batty won the silver medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

In the womenB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s division EnglandB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Annie Last and Evie Richards took first and second place respectively.

In his first Commonwealth Games, CanadaB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Leandre Bouchard placed sixth in a field of 20. The menB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s division is a 32.2 km race with seven laps of the 4.6 km track. Bouchard finished with a time of 1:19:15.

New Zealand took the top two spots for the menB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s division and South Africa took bronze.
