As dozens of sea lions feast on Atlantic salmon in Cermaq CanadaB次元官网网址檚 Rant Point fish farm site in Clayoquot Sound, Ahousaht First Nation officer Skookum John is saying the fish have escaped into the ocean the same way the sea lions got in.
B次元官网网址淭hese sea lions did not jump over the barrier. ItB次元官网网址檚 impossible for them to jump over. There is an electric fence all around. They ripped their way through the netting with their teeth,B次元官网网址 said John.
B次元官网网址淭hatB次元官网网址檚 how the sea lions got in and IB次元官网网址檓 pretty sure thatB次元官网网址檚 how the fish are getting out,B次元官网网址 he said.
In an April 4 news release, Cermaq claims the sea lions B次元官网网址渆ntered the pens from jumping over the stanchionsB次元官网网址 and that no sea lions are trapped.
But John doesnB次元官网网址檛 buy it.
B次元官网网址淭hey donB次元官网网址檛 want to deal with the (backlash) of saying that there is Atlantic salmon in the Pacific Ocean again,B次元官网网址 he said.
On Saturday, April 2, John captured several videos of sea lions feeding inside the fish farm site. He said he observed the sea lions going pen to pen for hours, and during that time, nobody from Cermaq or Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) was at the site.
B次元官网网址淣othing was done until the next morning,B次元官网网址 he said.
According to John, who is currently working with Ahousaht hereditary chiefs and Ahousaht band to improve systems on fish farms within their territory, a single pen contains roughly 30,000 fish.
B次元官网网址淎tlantic salmon will eat our wild salmon and if there is anything in the rivers, trout and all that, they will go and eat those,B次元官网网址 said John.
Cermaq Canada says the Rant Point site is double contained with a predator net encircling the farm and to date, no associated escapes have been noted. They plan on fully harvesting the site by the third week of April.
DFO has a strict requirement that no sea lions can be killed, and if there were reports of serious harm to sea lions, fishery officers would investigate, reads an April 6 email from the department. CermaqB次元官网网址檚 Conditions of Licence does not allow acoustic deterrents below water. However, DFO does permit the use of deterrent noise, such as an air cannon, above water.
B次元官网网址淐ermaq has been actively working to repair any holes in the nets to prevent fish escape. At this point, DFO has no indication that large numbers of Atlantic salmon have escaped from the facility,B次元官网网址 said DFO.
