One man is dead and another person is in hospital after a pickup truck left the road and crashed into a tree on Sunday March 8 at approximately 3:50 p.m. along Veteran's Memorial Parkway just south of Meaford Avenue.
The driver, a 68-year-old Langford man, later identified by the BC Coroner's Service as Wesley McKay (68) of Victoria, was rushed from the scene but died a short time later in hospital.
The passenger, a 59-year-old Colwood woman, was rushed to hospital in critical condition with serious internal injuries, said West Shore RCMP media spokesperson Const. Alex Berube in a media release.
A witness who was following the truck said the driver suffered an apparent medical emergency and it is believed he passed out behind the wheel. The passenger attempted to take control of the vehicle from the passenger side but was unable to prevent the vehicle from crashing.
The roadway was blocked off to traffic between Goldstream Avenue and Langford Parkway for several hours and the heavily damaged truck, a Chevrolet 1500 sat where it came to rest after hitting two boulevard trees. An RCMP crash expert was called in from Nanaimo to do measurements of the scene and other analysis.
It was undetermined whether speed was a factor in the crash, and police are not investigating the crash as a criminal incident.
"We are hoping for a quick recovery for the passenger during this difficult time," Berube said.
