Upcoming events: Black History Month 2019 in Victoria

Dive into history and watch talented performers throughout February

Next week marks the beginning of Black History Month 2019, meaning throughout February events are happening to celebrate Black ancestry and history. Here are a list of some of the events around town:

  • Wednesday, Jan. 30- There will be a Black History Month Reception Launch at Victoria City Hall, running from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The reception will have food from Fig Deli, and opening from Mayor Lisa Helps and Council members, before a presentation on Black History Month and a performance by renowned gospel singer, Charles Holloway.
  • Saturday, Feb. 2- VictoriaB次元官网网址檚 Black History Month Library Kickoff: Starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Central Library branch, members of the BC Black History Awareness Society and the African Heritage Association of Vancouver Island will showcase their displays and educate listeners about upcoming events.

  • Monday, Feb. 4- Black History Month at the Belfry- Spoken work, jazz, fusion, Latin jazz, traditional and contemporary Cuban piano performances are happening at the Belfry Theatre from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Doors open at 1291 Gladstone Ave. at 6:00 p.m., with a suggested donation of $10. Performers include Adelene da Soul Poet, whose ancestors were some of the earliest BC Black pioneers, and Pablo Cardenas, who was born in Cuba and has lived in Canada since 2010.
  • Sunday, Feb. 17- BC Black History and Heritage Day- Historical experts and displays will be presented alongside live jazz music from the Oak Bay High Jazz Band. Experts include those from the Saanich Pioneers, the United Empire Loyalists, the Victoria Genealogical Society and the Old Cemeteries Society. The event is at the Cook Street Activity Centre at #1-380 Cook Street from 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Admission is by donation.
