As traffic volume and the community continues to grow, the City of Colwood has announced it plans to install traffic lights in 2025 at the intersection at Veterans Memorial Parkway and Cairndale Road.
According to a news release from the city, options for both a signalized intersection and a roundabout were considered, with evidence suggesting traffic lights would be more suitable for this location.
"A signalized intersection presents fewer technical hurdles and is typically more accommodating for pedestrians and cyclists compared to roundabouts, providing a better overall experience for all users," said the city.
A roundabout was found to not be suitable for the location because it would require a "significant amount of land to accommodate the minimum footprint".
"In addition, retaining walls would be required to manage the elevation change from the east and west sides of Cairndale Road," said the city. "Sight lines would be limited for vehicles entering a roundabout from Cairndale Road, and the entry angles would require alignment changes."
A signalized intersection is now being designed for this location.
The need for an upgrade of the intersection at Veterans Memorial Parkway and Cairndale Road was identified in Colwood's 2015 Transportation Master Plan, which the city is currently in the process of updating.
