The Department of National Defence (DND) is ridding its Metchosin property of invasive species.
A burn notice has be issued for DNDB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s Rocky Point property, with four days of burning expect to take place between now and Dec. 22, when weather conditions and the ventilation index allow.
In a release, DND noted invasive plants, such as broom, and encroaching coniferous trees negatively impact military training areas at CFB Esquimalt. In order to improve training areas and restore the natural habitat for rare native plants, 6.6 hectares (roughly 16 acres) of invasive and encroaching plants were removed at the Metchosin property.
This month, these large piles of material are scheduled for a controlled burn and it is expected that will result in a considerable amount of smoke.
