You may think a mass shooting is an unlikely event in your corner of the world, but a former Kelowna RCMP officer, who operates a safety consultancy business, says thatB次元官网网址檚 not the case B次元官网网址� we all need to become more aware of how to protect ourselves.

Mass shootings are happening in big, small, rural and urban areas, explains Sam Ghadban of Great Circle Consulting. Active shooters target malls, schools and places of worship B次元官网网址� nowhere is safe.

The recent shooting in the , Texas, where 26 people were killed and 50 injured, happened in a town of 500. ItB次元官网网址檚 exactly the type of place, Ghadban said, where nobody thought it would happen.

ThatB次元官网网址檚 why this program is important.

B次元官网网址淧eople should be taking this and teaching it to their kids,B次元官网网址� he said. ItB次元官网网址檚 not to scare anybody, but B次元官网网址�. a healthy dose of situational awareness is important.B次元官网网址�

Ghadban said the first thing to remember is to go into every situation knowing where exut points and evacuation routes are.

Then, if the worst happens, remember B次元官网网址渞un, hide, fight.B次元官网网址�

These three words may seem simple, but if theyB次元官网网址檙e regularly considered itB次元官网网址檚 more likely the worst will be averted if and when the time of an active shooter situation arises.

B次元官网网址淭he first thing people typically do is that they want to hide and you donB次元官网网址檛 want to do that,B次元官网网址� he said. B次元官网网址淵ou donB次元官网网址檛 want to go through a cognitive process.B次元官网网址�

If there is no clear route to escape the situation then hide.

Move into rooms where youB次元官网网址檙e able to barricade yourself and others from the attacker.

Then fight. If the attacker breaches that room, be ready to use an improvised weapon B次元官网网址� fire extinguisher, chair, pen, scissors B次元官网网址� and commit to a fight.
