Mystery shopper scam hits West Shore

Three reported incidents highlight new fraud working the West Shore

A new scam is making the rounds on the West Shore, RCMP warn, after reported incidents in the last two weeks.

Residents received an email invitation to become a mystery shopper for various big companies. Individuals are asked to fill out an on-line application, then contacted and asked to visit stores to evaluate customer service.

Victims were sent cheques ranging from $1,500 to $4,000 and asked to buy items worth around $100 and transfer the remaining money to a location outside of Canada. Within days, banks determined the cheques were forged or fake, leaving the shopper to repay the funds.
