Daniel Penney, a 51-year-old Victoria man involved in an apparent suicide attempt March 13 in Colwood that sent two police officers to hospital, faces charges of second-degree murder in the death of his common-law partner in Victoria.
Penney was arrested by the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit and Victoria police in the murder of Caitlin Walton. Last Friday the 46-year-old woman was found dead in her home in the 800-block of Queens Ave. by VicPD officers, who had been requested to go there by West Shore RCMP.
The Major Crime Unit and VicPD have been investigating the homicide since and on Tuesday had charges of second-degree murder approved against Penney.
He remains in custody awaiting his next court date.
The two West Shore RCMP officers who removed Penney from an exhaust-filled garage at a Volmer Road home in Colwood suffered carbon monoxide inhalation during the rescue. They were hospitalized after the incident, but both have since returned to duty.
