Rebels look for larger share of the pie

The Westshore Rebels are looking for some alternative ways to cover their operating costs and have asked the City of Langford to reconsider their cost-sharing arrangement for food and beverage service at Westhills Stadium.

The Rebels have operated out of the facility since it opened in 2009 and had a cost sharing agreement with Performance Plus, a third party operator, for advertising and food and beverage services. However, costs to operate the concession have resulted in reduced or eliminated revenues.

So the team has asked the City to allow them to oversee their own food and beverage sales during their five regular season home games and potentially three playoff games. This new arrangement would see the Rebels receive 100 per cent of the profit, sharing 20 per cent of that with the City. They would also receive a 20 per cent profit share from food vendors and pay the City a 10 per cent royalty on that.

At MondayB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s meeting council agreed, providing the team acquires the appropriate licensing from the B.C. Liquor Control Board (and cover all of those costs) while also paying a damage deposit of $1,000.

Non-profit rental units get the green light on Goldstream Avenue

An application to rezone 616 Goldstream Ave. was approved by council. This change will allow for the creation of a 160-unit non-profit housing development. Council also approved a permissive tax exemption B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ on land and improvements B´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·“ that was subject to a covenant being registered on the title that establishes the proposed rental units as non-profit, affordable housing for at least 10 years.

Apartment buildings proposed for Jacklin Road and Orono Avenue

At MondayB´ÎÔª¹ÙÍøÍøÖ·™s meeting council also gave first reading to a rezoning application for 2839 Jacklin Road and 862, 864 and 866 Orono Avenue. The change from one classification of mixed-use residential commercial zoning to the other will allow for the construction of two six-storey apartment buildings.

One concern City staff had with the request was some of the required frontage improvements that would be needed for the project. Staff asked council to include a condition in the rezoning application that would see the applicant agree to register a statutory right of way and road dedication along the Orono Avenue and Jacklin Road frontages of the subject property. Council agreed.
